According to local media reports, a total of 119 people died within 72 hours and 5,517 people were diagnosed with the virus.

The Oman News said on Sunday that Oman had reported a record number of COVID-19 infections and deaths in the past 72 hours, during which 119 people died from the disease.

It said that a total of 5,517 people were diagnosed with the virus during the same period.

The number of infections and deaths surged after the country’s Ministry of Health Announce Earlier this month, three COVID-19 patients contracted a fatal fungal infection called mucormycosis (commonly known as “black fungus”).

Oman health officials also warned that there is a severe shortage of hospital beds due to the spread of highly-spreading variants of the coronavirus, the delayed introduction of vaccines and the relaxation of movement restrictions.

According to statistics from Johns Hopkins University, to date, Oman has recorded more than 256,542 coronavirus cases, including 2,848 deaths.

‘Black Fungus’

During the devastating coronavirus surge in India earlier this year, the fungus situation has attracted increasing attention. Due to the surge in the number of infections, other countries, including Egypt, have reported sporadic cases in recent months.

Black fungus existed in India before the virus outbreak, but it dominates thousands of COVID-19 patients who have been infected or have recently recovered, which has raised concerns.

Mucormycosis is caused by contact with Mucor, which is commonly found in soil, air, and even human noses and mucus.

Fungal infections can affect patients with weakened immune systems and underlying diseases (especially diabetes), as well as patients who overuse certain over-the-counter coronavirus drugs (such as steroids). Uncontrolled blood sugar puts people with weakened immune systems at a higher risk of contracting this disease.
